(Kohler&Campbell)

标准音高通常严格锁定国际标准音 A₄ = 440Hz(或根据合作乐队/特定录音需求微调至 442Hz)。

On-Site Tuning and Testing of a Kohler & Campbell Studio Piano

Tuning a studio piano entails meeting specific standards, with precision in pitch and playability being paramount. The standard pitch is typically locked to the international standard of A₄ = 440Hz (or adjusted to 442Hz for specific bands or recording requirements). Strict tolerances apply to pitch deviation; variances in unisons, octaves, and fundamental note groups are kept to a minimum. Regarding octave stretching, the high register is appropriately raised and the low register slightly lowered to align with human psychoacoustics and ensure harmonic consonance.

Traditional aural tuning by piano technicians holds irreplaceable artistic and physical significance, rooted in the human ear’s dynamic perception of overall musical harmony, overtone color, and the piano’s physical characteristics. This is first evident in the handling of “inharmonicity”—a phenomenon where variations in string thickness, length, and tension cause overtones to deviate from exact integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. Furthermore, by listening for “beats” in perfect fifths, fourths, or thirds, experienced technicians can dynamically adjust pitch stretching across the high and low registers, maximizing the instrument’s physical resonance and harmonic balance. Thirdly, traditional aural training cultivates the technician’s muscle memory regarding string tension feedback, sensitivity to minute movements of the tuning hammer, and adaptability to complex acoustic environments. Equally important is the ability to infuse the instrument with “color” and vitality through on-the-spot, improvisational playing; an excellent technician’s ears and fingers can capture subtle timbral nuances. The capacity to perform comparative playing and make technical fine-tuning adjustments—based on the performance style, the piano’s specific condition, and the room’s acoustics—to create a sound rich in layers and color serves as an essential benchmark for a master technician’s fundamental skills, auditory acuity, and artistic sensibility.
