Abstract
This research note investigates the mechanics and materials science behind substantial piano pitch raises. By analyzing four key physical dimensions—pinblock friction, soundboard flexural rigidity, music wire stress relaxation, and environmental thermal compensation—this paper demystifies empirical tuning craftsmanship based on electronic tuning device (ETD) telemetry data. It provides a technical analysis of “setting the pin” and calculated over-tuning curves to achieve mechanical equilibrium between timber and iron.
