Steinway B-211 reconstruction hammer tuning and tuning
A piano technician once said that rebuilding piano hammers must be done with the mindset of piano manufacturing, not simply as a hammer repair or replacement… Unfortunately, the hammer rebuilding of the Steinway B211 piano I’m currently handling didn’t follow this approach, leading to customer complaints and regret, while also making me feel a sense of responsibility and pressure.
The goal is to eliminate unwanted noise and interference while preserving energy. This involves maximizing the hammer penetration—deep penetration—and finding the minimum number of penetrations—which requires penetration at the point of impact… Using tuning wedges and forte tests to determine which strings are noisy. Based on years of experience tuning and voicing Steinway pianos in New York, I believe there are multiple ways to voic a new set of hammers to suit the piano and the customer’s needs. To compensate for any mismatches in hammer manufacturing and design, and during the rebuilding process, various voicing steps and procedures are appropriately used to ultimately achieve the ideal tone.
The Adagio Cantabile movement of Beethoven’s “Pathétique” is the most famous part of the entire piece, characterized by its sorrowful and profound melody. It begins with a gentle piano playing and a soft volume and timbre, then gradually builds up to a climax in the melody, before gradually fading away. After voicing, the Steinway piano’s tone undergoes a smooth change, fully showcasing its rich and full-bodied tone. Even at the end of the melody, the client and I resonated with each other, leaving a deep impression. a deep impression.
